AMPERSAND ACT i

| EXP. 001 | AMPERSAND ACT i

AMPERS&ND : act i (featured at top of page) is the first component of a multimodal experimental project examining the collective synthesis of knowledge and art. this immersive piece illustrates the duality and tension between analysis and expression in the process of ‘active metacognition.’

AMPERS&ND was first conceptualized during a storyteller residency at the diverse intelligences summer institute in st. andrews, scotland. the residency culminated with a storyteller salon, during which time the initial concept of AMPERS&ND (and preview film, AMPERSAND: act i) were presented. here you will find an audio excerpt of that presentation and the accompanying slides.

CHRONiCLES

| EXP. 002 | CHRONiCLES

AMPERSAND CHRONiCLES (a.k.a AMPERS&ND : act ii) features select excerpts from an ongoing digital journaling project that commenced towards the beginning of 2022. as alluded to in the references for AMPERSAND (see: Flowers for Algernon &&& the Book of Ecclesiastes), chronicling the ‘process’ of growth and synthesis is an integral component of the overarching practice of metamorphosis. in alignment with other creative references, such as Jump the Clock by esteemed poet Erica Hunt, creative aberration of the visual and linear style of textual storytelling is, in and of itself, part of the creative form employed for these entries. in addition to these textual journal entries, several audiovisual diary entries are also soon-to-be included in this collection.

these pieces were further developed and exhibited during an artist residency with The Future is Us Collective, a philadelphia-based artist collective focused on Black utopic imagining and somatic healing through art.

NB: due to formatting issues, some portions of these entries may appear serrated or split (not part of the original layout), corrected versions will be added in the near(ish) future.

COUNTERWORLDS

| EXP. 004 | COUNTERWORLDS

COUNTERWORLDS. a series of digital and physical mindmaps inspired by materials from the course Counterworlds: Innovation and Rupture in Communities of Artistic Practice, taught by art historian and curator brigid doherty, and renowned artist josephine meckseper, explored the possibilities and implications of utopic imagination in individual and communal artistic practice. the course featured the work (and accompanying presence in discussion) of several acclaimed artists and curators, including josiah mcelheny, lucy sante, hanne darboven, tourmaline, jenn nkiru, justine kurkland, and many others.

these mindmaps are reflective/responsive pieces to the materials from the counterworlds seminar, demonstrating some of the initial distillations of course discussions, related works, and ideologies from adjacent scholars and artists (including bell hooks and paul laurence dunbar), and their central tie-in to the ethos of the AMPERSAND project.

TECH[TON]IK (2023). an experimental triptych film featured in a multichannel installation/speculative radio station developed through the collaboratorium for radical aesthetics at princeton university. the larger installation — created in collaboration with artists evan haley & isadora knutsen — was showcased during ‘SOUND IMAGES: visual frequency and the black imaginary,’ an exhibition curated by writer, theorist, and collaboratorium founder dr. tina campt.

TECH[TON]IK is also a love letter to the internet culture, home cinema, & the power of remix. the film pays homage to freeform radio and sonic liberation movements. this piece draws from many ‘serendipitous’ archives, including the minds of nick cave, ekow eshun, john fm, & jenn nkiru.
